it ain't hard to tell...

I excell then prevail.
So I really thought I'd put this lil blogspot to rest after my grand return from Londra. But after reading my homie Jason's tight blog, listening to mad musica, and reading like my name was Ida B. Wells, I knew I had to put pen to paper once again (or rather finger to key board).

So once again I'm kicking this one for Brooklyn (and Queens) like MC Lyte... The come b(l)ack.

This summer in between playing out Illmatic and awaiting M.I.A's album to drop, I'm interning at Penguin Publishing - stealing books and trying to secure my place in the book/literary world. And let me assure you, my 8 readers out there, that the world is lily white. I'm talking George Wallace's ideal. While last summer in my first stint here, I felt like I was intergrating a Southern high school, this year is better, with the interns making Penguin look like Amherst (the requisite amount of kids of color to ensure "diversity" but to ensure white hegemony).
Is this Penguin's fault? Not neccessarily. There are many reasons why there aren't many people of color in the publishing industry:

1) it don't pay that much right out of college. Lots of black and Latino college students need to get paid to get rid of loans, and for financial independence. Many of us don't have the same luxuries as our white counterparts
2) hard field to break into. Unlike ibanking or law, the avenues of entering publishing aren't really straight forward. You have to be crafty like Sojourner Truth to make your way in
3)this goes back to number 1, lots of us brown folk (especially at the so called elite schools) aren't really encouraged to enter creative feilds. We're trying to make our paper stack. Which is only right, since true revolution and social change needs dollars. BUT then who becomes the vanguard for our cultural culture? I'm talking about, how do we foster our 21st century Ruth Browns, Romaire Beardens, Miles Davises, if most of them are going into medicine? (noble as it is)

As I try to iron out the answers, I encourage ya'll to peep the north star @ blackjusticeblog.blogspot.com.
